Hi All, As many of you already know, Bookit does not currently support Firefox 3. Of course we want Firefox 3 support in your hands as soon as possible, trust us, we do. Unfortunately Firefox 3's release landed at an inopportune time. You see, We are currently knee deep on Bookit 4 (which supports Firefox 3) and aren't quite done with it. But if you buy Bookit now, you'll get Bookit 4 free, so don't worry about that.
Now, all we ask from you is a little patience while we wrap it up. You see, We do this little operation in our free time after our regular 9 to 5 so development isn't as fast as everyone (including us) would like, but we're making progress. With the 'I want it yesterday' attitude of the internet these days it will be hard for some, but I have confidence most of you will be able to do it.
For the next couple months, your Firefox 3 bookmarks won't be in sync, but listen - it will be OK - trust me. So instead of shooting off an email telling us how much we suck because we don't support Firefox 3 yet - which wastes our time and yours - how about you take a big deep breath and do something enjoyable with your time. Luckily, it's summer and there are a lot of great things to do outside while you wait for Bookit 4.
cheers, will

Glad to hear that you're planning a release that will support Firefox 3. I will most certainly purchase!

Hi,
is icab4-support also planned for Bookit 4?
Regards,
Peter

Yes indeed, we all can wait a few months. Is there a place to sign up for a list, so I can be emailed when it's ready, rather than keep checking the site?
Best,
Nick

Yes, iCab 4 and Shiira 2 are also supported in the next version.

OK, but patience is not one of my virtues--However, I really love Bookit-3, so I can't wait for -4.
Can you suggest a link to the best way to manually sync bookmarks from Safari to FF3?

FOR THE NEXT COUPLE OF MONTHS?
ok i am out, sorry, but if you cant deliver as a real company, dont behave like one.
i will switch to bookdog!
i could spank myself that i really bought this... :(

I totally agree with @disappointed.
How long can it possibly take to make these edits and updates?
I've been using Bookdog simply because it's the only other option I can find. Although it's a great app, it's just not as simple to use as Bookit (was) :-(
This is one of the most awesome apps I've used especially since switching to the iPhone.
But seriously, let's get a move on here folks!

Check out what people are saying on VersionTracker. This is not good customer service. I agree that if this is some kind of part-time after-work thing that you are doing then you should not be charging us for it or implying that you are a real software company. Do us a favor and make it open-source so someone else will do the work you won't do.
And being condescending to your customers is a pretty asinine way of doing business, too. How'd you like it if your mechanic told you to not waste his time and go enjoy the summer until he got around to fixing your car? Real nice.

Stupid me. I pay for a product without checking it out first.
I work for a VERY large telecommunications company. If you were to call in with a problem and I said, 'how about you take a big deep breath and do something enjoyable with your time. Luckily, it's summer and there are a lot of great things to do outside while you wait for' your problem to be corrected, what do you think would happen? I would be looking for a new job. You might want to check on a customer care class!
I know, it is only 12 bucks wasted. But, if you are going to pretend to be a software company, you should act like one.

In all fairness, given that this is a paid app, the update to address FF3 should have been out by now. I was patient at first, but this isn't freeware. If this is just a part-time "for fun" project, you shouldn't be charging, not if you are not going to keep up with major browser updates.
I've had to switch to Bookdog as well, despite liking BookIt much more, as like the user above I'm an iPhone owner and really needed to keep my FF3 bookmarks in sync with Safari/iPhone. I've as yet not paid for Bookdog (still on trial period), but I'm not sure that I won't...two weeks may have lured me back to BookIt, but it's been more like two months since the FF3 release.

It's not summer here. I'm annoyed that there isn't a bigger disclaimer on your website that Firefox 3 isn't supported. I only bought it for this reason. Oh well.
*waits*

I fact, can I have my money back?
Bookdog is great.

Posting this a couple months ago would have saved a few of the " you suck " emails..

I agree with some of the critical notes above, but in my opinion, they would be sucking even harder if they would have posted this message earlier.
Get lost everyday software!

Found a way to use Booktit with Firefox3:
- type "about:config" in the FF address bar - type "export" in the filter field - set "browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML" to "true" (defaults to "false") - type "import" in the filter field - set "browser.places.importBookmarksHTML" to "true" (defaults to "false") - run Bookit, sync bookmarks
Unfortunately the second (import) option it is reverted to false after one import. But you will at least be able to use Firefox as your read-only master.

1. I appreciate you are not a full size software company, and that you develop this on this side. 2. In spite of (1), its been WAY too long for FF3 support. Please, we need an update and a delivery date for this. 3. I think you should also consider adding mobile me support for bookit, in the same way that Yojimbo backs up to MMe. You do that, you can enable seamless integrating of bookmarks across all browsers on multiple machines...and this is a good thing. 4. goto (2)

All of those complainers need a life. I'm sorry to hear that someone came to their homes and forced them to update to FF3 at gunpoint. Personally, I don't upgrade FF until all of the add-ons I like are updated. See? You have control!
And face it: You paid a lousy 12 bux for the software! The site was clear as a bell that it does not yet support FF3.
Whiners. Get outside and play.

there is a slight manual work around. you can export your FF3 bookmarks as HTML. Drop the file in the appropriate FF3 profile and then run BookIt. I then "migrated" from FF3 to Safari, so at least they match as of today. And then can sync my other browsers using Safari as my base. It's a lot of work, but worth it to me.
Reply by : 11:30 AM
this is a real bummer. i tried the two solutions above. the first doesn't work for me. FF3 doesn't auto import the bookmarks.html file. the second one is just too time consuming.
bookit is a great product and it's unfortunate that the authors have taken a vacation for so long. i bet a lot of people have switched to bookdog just because it works.
maybe it's time book it becomes freeware and the authors can move on to something more interesting and enjoy their summer!

Thanks for the update but unfortunately I need FF3 support now and I have got this elsewhere now. I don't regret registering BookIt for a moment, got good support from the guts at ES, had some inconsistencies between browsers an enjoyed BookIt's clean interface.

A group of friends and myself are looking to purchase this software to sync our bookmarks, however we are all on Firefox 3.
Please let us know when the next version is available so that we can purchase it from you.
Thanks,

as a followup to my comment few weeks/months ago...
Due to the fact that ES cant deliver FF3 support for MONTH, i decided to switch to BookDog and i can only say ... WOW ... BookDog is awesome. Honestly, i like the easy to use interface of BookIt very much, but i needed a tool that actually works.
The only thing that i regret is really paying for BookIt (and this is the only reason i was complaining).
So everyone ... trash BookIt and take a serious look at BookDog!

i really look forward to syncing my Safari/Firefox 3 bookmarks with Bookit... while i'm playing Duke Nukem Forever!
seriously dude, surely enough people paid for your software to warrant a little effort on your part. I used SafariBookmarkExporter before this... it didn't work well on Intel and it also broke with FF3. but i didn't complain to the developer. Why? Because it was freeware! take a note.
here's the link to Bookdog: http://www.sheepsystems.com/products/bookdog/

Continued poor support over FF3 (read:none), now half-way through September, makes this the worst 12 bucks i've ever spent (and i've bought a lot of stupid shit in my life)....
Reply by Theorik : 2:22 AM
Coming back to daniel dembach's workaround:
You can make the change permanent: Search for your Profile directory (it is in your home directory, library folder, e.g. ([YOU] is your user name, [STRANGE-COMBINATION-OF-LETTERS] is indeed a quite random string of letters) :
/Users/[YOU]>/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles/[STRANGE-COMBINATION-OF-LETTERS]
In this directory, create a plain text file called "users.js" (e.g. using TextEdit, TextWrangler, Smultron etc. – no DOC, no RTF[D]!). To this file, add the lines:
user_pref("browser.bookmarks.autoExportHTML", true); user_pref("browser.places.importBookmarksHTML", true);
This way, the preferences are re-set every time FF starts up. (The import preference is still indicated as "false" in about:config, but it seems to work for me.)
To comment on the ‘be nice to your customers’ debate: What about just offering a discount for those who buy Bookit while it's out of date?

...the hell?
You know, I'm okay waiting a little while for a product I paid for to work with the software I have - but COME ON. Firefox 3 was released in June. It's the middle of September, and you guys still haven't worked it out yet?
Your customer service SUCKS. If you're charging for a product, it's not at all unreasonable for your customers to expect the damn product to work. I can't believe I wasted 12 bucks on this crap.
I'm switching to Bookdog.

Are you guys crazy?
What you have here is a cash cow, you've already lost loads of money by not updating soon after FF3 was released, but you can still turn it around by just getting Bookit 4 live...
This is the make or break, surely its worth the few necessary updates for the amount of revenue it will generate???
I've paid my money, and I will wait but you really should put the finishing touches on this excellent piece of software.
Just my 2p.

I paid for Bookit fairly shortly before FF3 launched. Thoroughly regret that now. Not only is it 3 months since FF3 officially launched, but it's getting on for a year since the first beta was launched. It's not like FF3 suddenly appeared out of the blue. If this was free software I wouldn't mind. As it is, I feel like I've been ripped off. You've lost a potential customer for your other products. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

WOW What a bunch of whiny whinertons... I just bought this and I didn't notice that it didn't support FF3, which I have. I do think that it should be a lot more prominently displayed that FF3 is not supported but to say the product doesn't work is just a lie.. It works great for the other 3 browsers I am running so it's not like it's false advertising. I do think people have a right to be a bit upset over the update lag but OMG you obviously have the time to waste when you just keep whining away about your 12 bucks... I bet you don't complain as much to your government about the crap job they keep doing... that would be more useful

well, my bookdog trial is about to end and i'm pretty pissed that i have to pay more than i did for bookit for a program which (apart from the ff3 thing) is just not as good/nice/aesthetic etc...
i have 2 days left of bookdog and i would REALLY like someone to say right, bookit 4 will be out in 2 weeks... then i'll hang on, if its gonna be another few months then i'll bite the bullet and get bookdog...
you guys have the better software, the better look, why are you denying yourself a source of income????
Reply by : 10:41 PM
As business owner and a professional content creator myself I would never be able to do what you have done and treat so many people the way you have and still be in business.
In essence you stole from us. I think the majority of people understand this is a part time thing for you, but you've charge many people real money for product that simple does not work. Not when you've had ample time to update your product (4 months after FF3 release).
As many I have moved on with my life as you suggested and went with your competitor Bookdog. You may feel smug now, but in the end you're the one with lost revenue and severely damaged company image.
Reply by : 2:55 AM
I think the real reason people are genuinely miffed about this is that aesthetically and functionally bookit is the much nicer product to use over bookdog, seems much more like a native os x application and overall would just be better.
So people are annoyed that they've had a taste of this better software and feel like by being forced to go with bookdog they are getting second best.
if bookit 4 really is taking this long (which i doubt, i would have said you are just not putting the time in) could i suggest you simply offer a quick update to 3 to kick this software back into life... please?
i'm sure you are now disheartened by all these negative comments, but in the grand scheme it wont make the world of difference if you just sort it soon, you'll be back on top.

just wanna grab the developer by the shoulders and give him a bloody good shake!!!
"come on man! get out of neutral!"
then a quick slap across the face for making everyone wait so bleedin' long and the point would be well made :D

Goodness gracious, look at the date! In three days, it will be *three months* since the above blog post was written. :-o
A few whiners aside, commenters here do have a very important point: the company that makes Bookit has forgotten its manners! Indeed, failure to release timely updates is un-businesslike; it reduces credibility.
Everyday Software has lost me as a customer. I also won't be recommending their product to any of my students.
Reply by : 11:49 PM
Four months have now passed and Firefox 3 is not supported. You have fallen short on your word. If your intent is to be a developer of software, you must learn the first order of business, Stand behind your product. At times that may be difficult. If a vendor sells a product, then that product becomes your word.
It is very hard getting started in this industry. Many products fail. Others make it big. But only by sticking to a product that you feel you can support. In either case you must stand behind you product. If you are not going to, then you need to get out of the business.
In this case you have underestimated the amount of resources you need and failed to stand behind your product. Any one of these is a guarantee for failure.
Short of refunding the customer there money, you should apologize. Once you have lost the customers trust it is next to impossible to get it back.
Reply by : 7:22 AM
Since it's obvious that FF3 support is never coming, can you please make Bookit open source so that someone in the community can take it over? Yes it's true that you won't be able to milk funds from people like me who bought your product thinking you'd support it, but then again, think of how good you'll feel once your product becomes useful again.
Reply by : 8:49 AM
I must say that while many of the previous posts are a little demanding as doing these things in one's spare time can be taxing, I am surprised and also a little frustrated now that support for FF3 has not been released yet.
We all value your software otherwise we would not be ranting and raving like we are but could you please also understand that patience has it's limits? Four months have passed since you posted this blog entry and we have not even seen a response to all these comments which is making me worried that I should start moving on.
Please advise me otherwise.

Ok, so, I just learned about Bookit and decided to purchase it. After spending 30 minutes trying to find the registration screen I see here that Firefox 3 is not currently supported.
BTW, I had a great summer and didn't have to exercise patience like eveybody else but Thanksgiving has come and gone now so what's up?????
Reply by : 1:07 AM
summer is over and still no firefox support… you can write what about breath holding and no need to sync firefox and a little patience, if you want… but what's the use of your app then?
Reply by : 9:55 AM
The fact that there is no Firefox 3 support months after its released is just not acceptable for paid software.
And the attitude of 'hold your breath and enjoy the sunshine' is fine for Freeware but that's not what Bookit is.
So get your act together. Seriously.
